April 23, 2025 is the Spanish Language Day. This day was initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and is one the six language days dedicated to the six official UN languages. The date for the UN Spanish Language Day was chosen because it is also Day of Hispanity, meaning the Spanish speaking world.
With more than 400 million speakers worldwide, Spanish belongs to the four most spoken languages on the world. Additionally Spanish is the official language of many international organizations and is considered a world language. Apart from Spain, Spanish is far spread in Northern and South America. In many parts of America Spanish is an official language or at least is spoken by many people. Spanish Language Day is a tribute to that Southern European language.
The day used to be celebrated on October 12 to commemorate the “Día de la Hispanidad”. Later it was moved to 23 April to honor the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, who died on 22 April 1616.
