Shōwa Day 2025

April 29, 2025 in Japan

Japan celebrates Shōwa Day on April 29, 2025. This holiday is part of Japan's Golden Week and held annually to remind the nation of how it recovered from turbulent times, as well as to think about Japan's future. Golden Week is a series of four public holidays during only one week, which most Japanese use to take off for vacation.

Shōwa Day honors the Shōwa Emperor Hirohito, whose birthday was April 29. Hirohito was the reigning emperor from 1926 to 1989. The day was known as The Emperor's Birthday until Hirohito died in 1989. Japan renamed the day into Greenery day that year. In 2007 they moved Greenery Day to May 4 and since then April 29 is officially called Shōwa Day. Showa means “enlightened peace”.
