September 2025 is National Guide Dog Month in the United States. This month is a celebration of all guide dogs or service dogs. The purpose of this month long celebration is to raise awareness, support and appreciation for guide dog schools. The awareness month was first established in 2008 as a fundraising drive. Dick Van Patten was the one, who wanted to raise money for guide dog schools, as he was impressed by the intelligence of those dogs, and also learned that it costs about $40,000 and up to two years to train such a dog. In 2009 Guide Dog Month was first officially celebrated in May. Also in 2009, the Govenors of Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, and Nebraska issued proclamations in recognition of the month. 2010 it was moved to September, as there have been conflicts with other fundraising drives.
