The filling is covered with dough and then baked. They are served when they are still warm and fantastic with some ice cream.

They look like crunchy pouches and taste like a small cake. You can vary the recipe by alternating the kind of apples or other ingredients you add. There also is a Disney movie called The Apple Dumpling Gang, named after that pastries, but it does not seem to have anything to do with the creation of National Apple Dumpling Day.
