Madaraka Day 2025

June 1, 2025 in Kenya

Madaraka Day is celebrated on June 01, 2025. In Kenya people commemorate its independence from the United Kingdom on 12 December 1963. Madaraka is the Swahili word for "responsibility" or "self-government". Huge military parades take place and the Prime Minister holds a speech. The soldiers are dressed in black, red or green and demonstrate the colours of Kenya’s national flag. In the evening there are fireworks.

Native people show their traditional dances and music. Madaraka Day in Kenya is time to commemorate Africa’s freedom-fighters, heroes and role-models. Kenya still struggles with problems like corruption, violence and poverty, but the major aim is to be a strong and independent country and a safe place to live. On the 1st of June in 1963 Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya’s first prime minister.
