The United Nations (UN) have proclaimed the 25th of March 2025 as International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members. This day points to the dangers and risks staff members of the UN and other organizations are exposed to during their work. The date leads back to the kidnapping of the UN-staff member Alec Collett in 1985 who had worked for the UN-relief organization in Palestine.
The United Nations have their own department of safety and security but the dangers and risks are huge, still. The safety trainings and the agreement about the safety of UN staff members cannot protect them from every danger. The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members commemorates all the UN-members who get locked up, arrested or lost.
