The International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda takes place on April, 07 2025. The day, which is also known as International Day of Remembrance of the genocide in Rwanda, was initiated by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The UN proclaimed the observance on 23 December 2003 to commemorate 1994, when during about three months of ongoing violence in Rwanda between 500,000 and one million people have lost their lives.
The backgrounds of violence were longstanding conflicts between the Government and the rebel movement Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). The assassination of President Habyarimana was the trigger that led to the genocide.
