Independence Day of Eritrea is celebrated on May 24, 2025 as the most important national holiday of this east African country. The day is work free, as it is a public holiday. After 30 years of the Eritrean War for Independence, on May 24, 1991, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) defeated the Ethiopian forces and helped a coalition of Ethiopian rebel forces take control of the Ethiopian Capital Asmara. From this day on, independence was re-instated, as people voted for it during a UN-supervised referendum. In 1993, Eritrea's independence was officially declared so it gained international recognition. Eritrea Independence Day is observed throughout the country. Most celebrations, however, take place in Asmara. One week long, there is carnival on the principal avenues, and also there are banquets, live music programs and many more.
