Independence Day of Cyprus on October 01, 2025 is a public holiday in the Republic of Cyprus. It is celebrated by festivals at the schools and a large military parade in Nicosia, the capital city. The festivities culminate in the evening in front of the president’s palace. The war between the EOKA, a Greek Cypriot military group and the British took four years until in 1960 the Republic of Cyprus was founded and independence from the British Empire was gained. The first president was archbishop Makarios III. One year later Cyprus joined the United Nations. Cyprus National Day also refers to the Independence from Britain and is held on April 1.
