Free Comic Book Day is observed annually on May 03, 2025. The event was established by Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California. He brainstormed the idea in his "Big Picture" column in the August 2001 issue of “Comics & Games Retailer” magazine. It is a promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores.
Free Comic Book Day has often been tied to the release of a major theatrical film adaptation of a well-known superhero property, in order to take advantage of the film's heavy promotion and related press about the comic book medium. The first event took place in 2002, just a day after the opening of the first Spider-Man movie. However, successful events did not have specific date tie-ins to comics-related movie openings.
A comic book is a publication of comic art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes. Panels are often accompanied by brief descriptive prose and written narrative, usually dialog contained in word balloons. The first comic book appeared in the United States in 1933 and was a reprinting of earlier newspaper comic strips. (With material from: Wikipedia).
