In 1919 eastern and western Ukraine signed the Treaty of Unity; this is celebrated annually as state holiday on the Day of Unity of Ukraine, 2025 on January 22. Before the unification both parts of Ukraine belonged to different empires. The eastern part was founded 1918 on Russian territory. The western part was also founded 1918 but as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Day of Unity of Ukraine was established in 1999 by a decree of the Ukrainian President. Today millions of people come together to celebrate and show their solidarity. People light candles, from human chains across bridges and marching peacefully to demonstrate unity.
