Day of Remembrance in Cambodia 2025

May 20, 2025 in Cambodia

Day of Remembrance in Cambodia is observed on May 20, 2025. The day formerly is called the National Day of Hatred, and takes place annually. However, the more correct translation of the day would be "Day of Tying Anger" or "Day of Maintaining Rage" The holiday commemorates the excesses of the Khmer Rouge regime that ruled the country between 1975 and 1979.

The day was first launched in the People's Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) on May 20, 1984, after it was initiated by a September 12, 1983 conference in Phnom Penh, which about 300 intellectuals and clergymen attended. The date marks the initiations of mass killings in Democratic Kampuchea on May 20, 1976.

The Day of Remembrance in Cambodia is still celebrated in Cambodia, although the commemorations lost much of their prominence. However, still commemorations are held, such as public theatre plays about the Khmer Rouge period. Some people also visit Buddhist ceremonies that day.
