The Andean-Amazonic New Year is a celebration of the winter solstice and is observed as national holiday in Bolivia on June 21, 2025. It is an ancient celebration of the Aymara people who live in the Andes and the Altiplano region. The solstice is an important time for rural people, as it ends the harvest. The President of the indigenous Aymara people, Evo Morales, declared the solstice as national holiday in 2009. The ceremony of welcoming the New Year is accompanied with music and a bonfire. A packet is placed in the fire as offering to the Earth Mother, Pachamama, containing a llama fetus, some coca leaves, cigarettes and sweets.
