In North Korea Alphabet Day in North Korea is celebrated on January 15, 2026. The day is also called Chosŏn'gŭl Day. It is a national commemorative day marking the invention and the proclamation of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong the Great. On this day in 1444 (1443 in lunar calendar), the alphabet is believed to be created of Hunmin Jeongeum. The alphabet of the Korean language is called Hangul, and therefore the day is also referred to as Hangeul Day, however, mainly in South Korea. In 2013, the day became a national holiday. South Korea celebrates its own Alphabet Day, which takes place annually on October 9. Here the day is known as Hangeul Proclamation Day.
