Columbia observes the Afro-Colombian Day on May 21, 2025. It is an annual holiday to commemorate the contribution of Afro-Colombian communities and the official abolition of slavery in 1851. To honor the Afro-Colombian community cultural and educational programs are held this day as well as festivals and other public events. Many Afro-Colombians celebrate this special day in commemoration of their freedom. In 1991 Columbia officially recognized the population of Afro-Colombians and nowadays sees itself as multicultural. But nevertheless there are still challenges to be mastered. Afro-Colombian Day is a day to raise awareness to these challenges and to find ways to deal with them.
