African Liberation Day is observed on May 25, 2025 by various African countries but also by African communities in other parts of the world. The holiday is observed in commemoration of the first Conference of Independent African States held in Accra, Ghana on April 15, 1958, where Africa Freedom Day was founded by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The purpose of the conference was to mark the progress of the African liberation movement.
On May 25, 1963 a summit was held to found the Organization of African Unity. The OAU changed the name of the holiday to African Liberation Day and the date to the founding day of the organization. It is a day to raise awareness in Africa and African communities worldwide for ongoing progress of the liberation movement and the determination of the people fighting for freedom.
