National Pecan Day 2025

April 14, 2025 in the USA

Pecans with and without shells

National Pecan Day is observed on April 14, 2025. It is celebrated since 1996 in the U.S. and was initiated by the National Pecan Shellers Association. "Pecan" is from an Algonquian word, meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack. A pecan, like the fruit of all other members of the hickory genus, is not truly a nut, but is technically a drupe, a fruit with a single stone or pit, surrounded by a husk.

Pecans are a good source of protein and unsaturated fats. Like walnuts (which pecans resemble), pecans are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, although pecans contain about half as much omega-6 as walnuts. (With material from: Wikipedia)
